What is a dynamic microphone? Working, Advantages & Disadvantages

What is a Dynamic Microphone

We always talk about microphones on Geeksper. Today’s we’ll discuss a bit about dynamic microphones.

A microphone or mic is a gadget that is used to record sound or any audio input in technical terms. This device converts sound waves into electrical signals to store the audio sound as input. The microphones have vast categories depending upon their use and type. One of these types is the Dynamic microphones that convert sound input through electromagnetism into an electrical signal.

We take a more deep look into dynamic microphones and their advantages and disadvantages.

What is a Dynamic Microphone?

When we are talking about recording audio or music input, then the term dynamic is used for those mics that are used for converting audio or sound input into an electrical signal through a magnetic coil placed in the mic. Dynamic microphones have electromagnetic coils that help to convert sound energy into electrical energy with a very clear input.

The dynamic microphones can be of two types, one of Moving coil dynamic microphone and the other type is Ribbon Dynamic Microphone. Some features that these dynamic microphones have been.

  • These mics include a magnetic framework inside their construction to provide a magnetic field for recording sound.
  • They also include conductive elements connected to lead wires to transfer voltage or current through them.
  • These mics rely on a mechanism to cause a relative movement between the magnetic field produced from the coil and the conductive element.

How Does a Dynamic microphone work?

The dynamic microphones can work in two ways depending on their types. The transducer designs of dynamic microphones include 2 types that use electromagnetism for converting any sound into clear audio. These 2 types are:

  • Moving-coil dynamic microphone
  • Ribbon dynamic microphone

Moving-Coil Dynamic Transducer Design

When we talk about the moving-coil dynamic microphone design, it is a non-conductive diaphragm with a conductive metal coil attached at the backside of the microphone to record audio input.

  • The mics have their base cut in a cylindrical shape in which this coil is placed for the electromagnetic field.
  • The magnetic field caused by it is permanent, and it makes electromagnetic induction work properly.
  • The conductive coil and diaphragm move along together to that create an oscillation between the conductive coil within the magnetic field that is produced. This causes to create AC voltage due to electromagnetic induction.
  • The AC voltage then produced by it is then conducted via lead wires in the mic that produce the mic’s audio signal.

Ribbon Dynamic Transducer Design

The second type of dynamic microphone is the dynamic ribbon transducer that is made with a diaphragm that typically looks like a ribbon. This ribbon is created from ultra-thin aluminum, having a magnetic structure that covers its surroundings. The working of this type of microphone is straight as the conductive diaphragm just moves back and forth in its fixed position within the magnetic field that is around it. This movement causes the AC voltage of the mic signal to flow through this to produce sound.

Advantages of the Dynamic Microphone

Talking about the advantages, some of the advantages of using these microphones are.

  • This type of microphone doesn’t need a power supply to work
  • Dynamic mics are used for vocals, recording drums, and also guitar amps with a clear quality
  • They amplify vocals and sounds for all types of recordings
  • These microphones are cheaper than other types of mics
  • These mics are the most durable and high quality
  • There is a great advantage of these microphones as they can handle Sound Pressure Level (SPL) because these mics use a moving coil magnetic diaphragm that produces an audio signal.

Disadvantages of Dynamic Microphone

  • These mics are usually heavy microphone diaphragm
  • The wire coil limits the movement of their assembly that can restrict the frequency and actual response rate of the mic
  • Not as good as condenser microphones
  • Not suitable for recording instruments with higher frequencies
  • This mic can miss recording some sounds as it requires a lot of sound pressure to move its coil
  • Not so accurate as a condenser mic.

Conclusion

This was a guide on Dynamic Microphones in which we shared all the info about the working of a dynamic mic and the two types of dynamic mics that have a different working framework. These microphones produce sound input from the electromagnetic field produced from the coil. They are mostly used for recording drums, vocal, and guitar amps, and they can also amplify the audio levels for them.

If you are looking to buy a dynamic microphone for recording audio at your home or for indoor activities, you can go for it. These mics work well with your instrumental equipment, but they are not suitable for studio recordings.
