The Rode M5 is a more versatile option in terms of power as it can work with either +24V or +48V phantom power, whereas the AKG P170 cannot.
Both of these pencil mics are cardioid and capture sound signals from the front direction and eliminate any signals from the sides and from the back. This makes both of them equally good options for musical recordings as they are very well resistant to environmental noise.
Rode M5 has a good maximum SPL handling of 140 dB, and this makes it a good mic for handling most instruments and vocals.
